SaaS pricing for your first customers: price a SaaS product from what their workaround costs, pick the unit you charge for and check the price three ways.
A safe annual plan discount is smaller than the share of the year that an average monthly customer doesn't pay for because they leave. With monthly churn of 3–6%, a monthly customer pays for roughly 9 to 10 of the first 12 months, so the break-even discount is about 15–27%. For most small SaaS products "two months free", a discount of 16.7%, sits safely inside that range and brings the cash forward. Below is the formula, a table for different churn rates and a worked example, plus the cases where a smaller discount is wiser.
A worked example: a coffee-shop app
Yana runs CupQueue, a web app that lets coffee shops take orders from customers' phones so they can pick up a drink without queuing. It costs 500 UAH a month. About 4% of monthly customers leave each month: a shop closes, changes owners or decides the queue isn't that bad.

What a monthly customer really pays in a year
The first month is paid for certain. Each following month the customer is still there with probability 1−c, where c is monthly churn. So the expected number of months paid in the first year is
months=1+(1−c)+(1−c)2+⋯+(1−c)11=c1−(1−c)12
With c=0.04:
0.041−0.9612≈9.68 months
At 500 UAH that's about 4,841 UAH from an average monthly customer in the first year. The break-even discount is the share of the year that isn't paid for:
d∗=1−129.68≈19.3%
Compare the options with 4,841:
5,400 (10% off): more than a monthly customer brings. Safe, but may not tempt anyone.
5,000 (two months free): still more than 4,841, and easy to explain. Yana picks this one.
4,500 (25% off): less than a monthly customer brings. She would be paying 341 UAH per customer for the cash upfront.

The higher your churn, the more an annual plan is worth to you, and the bigger the discount you can afford. If you don't know your churn yet, measure it first; how to calculate MRR and churn shows how from one month of events.
The customers who choose annual are not average
There's a catch. The shops that pick a yearly plan are usually the ones most sure they'll stay. Suppose they would have churned at only 2% a month on a monthly plan. For them, the break-even discount is 10.3%: month by month they would have paid about 5,382 UAH in the first year, so two months free (5,000) costs Yana about 382 UAH per such customer.
That doesn't make the annual plan a bad deal. It means the discount pays for three things, not for retention alone:
Cash now. A year's money on day one.
Certainty. A customer who has paid for a year doesn't reconsider every month, and has twelve months to get the product working in their shop.
Fewer failed payments. One payment a year instead of twelve chances for a card to expire.
A practical range: between about 10% and your break-even discount. Below 10% few customers switch; above break-even you're paying for cash you could get more cheaply.
Against the 4,841 UAH an average monthly customer pays in year one, 10% off (5,400) and two months free (5,000) are safe, while a quarter off (4,500) costs Yana money
What the cash does for a small company
In a typical month CupQueue signs 32 new shops, and 8 choose the yearly plan. In month one those 8 pay 8 × 5,000 = 40,000 UAH instead of 8 × 500 = 4,000. That's 36,000 UAH of extra cash in a single month, repeated as long as the share holds.
For a self-funded company that extends the runway, see personal runway, and pays for things that can't wait, like a laptop or a first contractor. Two rules keep it safe:
It is not revenue for this month. You owe the customer 12 months of service. In MRR a yearly plan counts as 5,000 / 12 ≈ 416.67 UAH a month, not 5,000 in the month it was paid.
Keep enough to refund. Decide your refund policy in advance, for example a refund for the unused months within the first 30 days, and don't spend money you might have to return.
Renewals and price changes
Remind before renewal. An email 30 days before the year ends avoids angry refund requests and gives you a chance to hear about problems.
Renew at the price in force, with notice. If you raise prices, yearly customers usually renew once more at their old price; announce the change well before their renewal date.
Set the monthly price first. The annual discount is always relative to the monthly price, so get that right first: how to price a SaaS product.
Common mistakes
Copying "20% off" from a big company's pricing page. Their churn and cash needs are not yours.
Counting the yearly payment as that month's revenue. Your MRR jumps, then flatlines, and every decision based on it is wrong.
A discount above break-even. You end up paying for cash with margin you needed.
Hiding the monthly option. Customers who aren't sure yet will leave instead of choosing annual.
Key takeaways
Months paid in the first year: (1−(1−c)12)/c. The break-even discount is one minus that number divided by 12.
At 3–6% monthly churn the break-even is roughly 15–27%; "two months free" (16.7%) is a safe default for most.
Customers who choose annual churn less, so stay between about 10% and your break-even.
Count the yearly payment as a twelfth per month in MRR, and keep enough cash to refund.
FAQ
What is a typical annual plan discount for SaaS?
Many products offer 15–20%, often framed as "two months free". The right number for you depends on your monthly churn: calculate your break-even discount and stay below it.
Should I offer an annual plan from the start?
Yes, if your product is used all year. It brings cash when it's scarcest and gives new customers time to get value. Keep the monthly option too.
How do I count an annual plan in MRR?
Divide the yearly payment by 12. A 5,000 UAH annual plan adds about 416.67 UAH to MRR every month of the year, not 5,000 in the month it's paid.
What if a yearly customer wants to cancel?
Decide the policy before you sell, write it on the pricing page and follow it. A common choice is a refund of unused months within a short period after purchase and no refund after that.
