Before you start

Dana's uneven year

Today it's Dana's money. She's a tutor at Klasna working for herself, and last summer slowly ate her savings: June, July and August each took a little more. On top of that there's the war: if she has to leave Kyiv, or half her students stop, what then?

This case closes the module. You'll separate the summer dip she can plan for from real emergencies, size both, decide where to keep the money and plan how to fill it by June.

A predictable dip isn't an emergency

When an income follows a season, some of its low months are not surprises at all — they arrive on the calendar every year. A cost you can see coming is a planned cost, not an emergency, and it deserves its own pot.

Dana's summer 2026 shows it in numbers. Even after cutting flexible spending to 3,000, each month ran a loss: June −4,482.34, July −12,002.34, August −9,182.34, so the summer took 4,482.34 + 12,002.34 + 9,182.34 = 25,667.02 UAH from savings. That happens every year.

So a seasonal dip is sized like a bill and saved for in a summer reserve during the good months. If it were paid from the emergency cushion instead, the cushion would sit empty every September — exactly when a real, undated shock is just as likely to come.

  • Do
Summer loss 25,667 → save it in a summer reserve during the busy months.
  • Don't
Pay the summer from the emergency cushion.

Then the cushion is empty every September, when a real shock could come.

Sizing two pots

Two pots do two jobs, and each is sized on its own terms before they're added up. The summer reserve equals the predictable dip — last summer's 25,667.02 UAH. The emergency cushion is months of essentials, and the number of months reflects the risk: one income, a sole proprietor, a war, so six months is a reasonable target (a lower number like four is defensible with a reason).

With essentials of 23,102.34 a month, six months is 6 × 23,102.34 = 138,614.04. The total effort to have both full by 1 June is 138,614.04 + 25,667.02 = 164,281.06 UAH.

Adding them shows the whole climb, but they stay separate pots: the summer reserve empties and refills every year, while the cushion is only touched in a true emergency. Sizing them together but spending them apart is what keeps the cushion whole.

  • Do
    6 × 23,102.34 = 138,614.04 cushion + 25,667.02 summer = 164,281.06.
  • Don't
One big 164,281 pot for everything.

Keep them separate so the summer doesn't drain the emergency cushion.

The gap, spread over months

To turn a target into a monthly saving, subtract what you'll already have and divide the rest by the months you have. Only money you can actually reach by the deadline counts.

By June Dana will have 93,400: the 31,000 savings, the 22,400 in dollars, and the 40,000 deposit that opens on 15 March (before June). The 9,400 on her card is October's spending and doesn't count. Against the 164,281.06 target, the gap is 164,281.06 − 93,400 = 70,881.06, over eight months (October to May): 70,881.06 / 8 = 8,860.13 UAH a month.

That's a useful reality check. Against last year's October–May income of 338,000, 8,860 is about 21% of every payment on top of taxes — fine in a strong March, far too tight in a 33,000 December. A number this demanding is a signal to stage the target rather than to give up.

  • Do
    Gap 70,881.06 ÷ 8 months = 8,860.13 a month.
  • Don't
Count the 9,400 card money and the deposit as available now.

Card money is October's spending; the deposit only opens on 15 March.

Staging the plan over the year

A plan that's too heavy in one month breaks; staging it over the year keeps it alive. Order the steps by what each one depends on.

  1. This week, lay out the money you already have: split the reachable 53,400 across two banks and keep about a week of cash. This costs nothing and protects what's there.
  2. From the next payment, start the automatic rule: 10% of every Klasna payment to savings.
  3. 15 March, the deposit matures and moves to instant access — a fixed date you can't bring forward.
  4. By 1 June, the summer reserve and four months of essentials are in place, before the lean summer starts.
  5. Through to the end of 2027, keep saving until the cushion reaches the full six months.

Placement first (it's free and immediate), then the saving habit, then the milestones fixed by dates. Staging turns one impossible monthly number into a sequence of reachable ones.
